FINDING SERENITY AND SELF-AWARENESS WITH MINDFULNESS
Today I would like to talk to you about how to find greater serenity and self-awareness with MINDFULNESS, a topic that is very close to my heart and one that I have become very passionate about over time. The word used to define this practice comes from English and can be translated into Italian as “consapevolezza” = “knowing simultaneously”.
WHERE DOES MINDFULNESS COME FROM?
Mindfulness is a meditative practice that finds its remote origins in the teachings of Buddhism and Zen meditation. It has recently been adapted to Western cultural patterns by physicians, sociologists and psychologists, thus also gaining a fair amount of scientific dignity. Lately we have been hearing more and more about it, but perhaps not everyone knows what it is.
Mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention to the present moment in an intentional, nonjudgmental manner. It is therefore a practice that aims to bring the person closer to greater awareness and knowledge of their bodies, paying attention to their sensations, emotions and cultivating the capacity for a non-reactivity towards what is happening in the present moment.
Through the practice of Mindfulness we will be able to achieve a new awareness, a sense of harmony and balance between body and mind, without dwelling upon the past. Instead, as in the concept of “Carpe Diem“, we can be mindful of the present and thus of our surroundings, colors, tastes and scents by “savoring” each moment. I discovered Mindfulness a few years ago, and I fell in love with it instantly. As you know, my life is equally divided between being a professional, a wife and a mom. As is often the case for most of us, managing the many aspects of one’s daily life is not easy, and we can often get caught up in stress. The risk is that we lose sight of what is really important to us and find ourselves prey to dissatisfaction and discomfort of various kinds. Since I began to delve into the study and practice of Mindfulness, I have found great serenity in the joy of savoring individual moments, relaxing into the experience of the “here and now“.
Mindfulness for me is fully enjoying the moments I spend together with my son
WHY DO I SUGGEST YOU TO PRACTICE MINDFULNESS?
Mindfulness practice promotes the control of stress, which if excessive is a contributor to many diseases. Now that gut-brain connections are known, we know with increasing clarity that so many illnesses are somatizations of emotional tensions: through Mindfulness we can counteract them.
Being more aware of the emotions we experience, enjoying the moments we spend with ourselves or with our loved ones, listening to the sound of nature. …Already the simple fact of savoring the moment instead of brooding helps us regain harmony between body and mind by making us see things in the right dimension. And all of this is deeply liberating.
Mindfulness can also be applied at mealtime and I talk about it in this article. On Instagram you can find my day-to-day journal in photos, and in this Facebook album you can find The Dishes of My Patients.
